May 1940 Flight Lieutenant Ken Armstrong is deployed to an airfield in France.

His arrival coincides with Hitler’s invasion of France and the Low Countries.

He picks up victory after victory but nothing he can do will be enough to turn the tide.

Armstrong befriends the pilots he fights beside but is forced to watch them drop out of the sky each day.

The battle for France will be lost.

But that doesn’t mean the war is over.

Armstrong and his men are determined to fight tooth and nail against impossible odds.

In this tale of dignity and bravery when all hope seems lost, Armstrong must do what needs to be done.

As a former pilot and Squadron Leader himself, Robert Jackson masters the plot and brings history to life in fantastic detail.

This is the second novel to feature the charismatic Flight Lieutenant Ken Armstrong, following on from Flames Over Norway.

Robert Jackson (b. 1941) is a prolific author of military and aviation history, having become a full-time writer in 1969. As an active serviceman in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve he flew a wide range of aircraft, ranging from jets to gliders.

Highly realistic historical fiction, detailing the invasion of France
by the Germans in 1940, centering on the exploits of RAF aviator Ken Armstrong,
allied with the French forces resisting the invasion, this book
keeps the reader's interest from start to finish, and it tells of heroism that can only inspire.
It has valuable descriptions of both the large-scale troop movements
and the detailed tactics of aerial combat.

I'm sending a copy today to my brother Cliff for his birthday.

I'm glad to note that Robert Jackson has written more such novels.
I've become a fan.

Flames over France Robert Jackson 9781540891600 Books Reviews

An excellent story, written from a fresh perspective not normally seen in western fiction. Love that one of the heroes is Polish, as most western books tend to give them, and the French, little credit for their efforts in ww2.
A good war story well developed characters and situations. The description of the aircraft was a remarkable one and very complete.
I
The force of Gerrman Wermacht was well known by France and Britain, but they think was the German Government as a contention for the advance of Comunism.Thence their armed forces were unable to stop the overwhilming power of the Nazi Army. Otherwise the British Espeditionary Force was a "sample" not an Army.
This is the first of Robert Jackson's books that I've read. He incorporates a lot of history into his writing and this blended fiction with fact. I found his knowledge of and description of the battle to defend France from the nazi invasion eye-opening. He writes well, and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.
The book alternates from telling personal stories to basically recounting military history. The author seems to very much enjoy World War II military history. The personal stories are not as strong. If you like the history of World War II, you will probably like this book. But in terms of character development and storyline, the book is very average.
Very authentic story of a downed RAF flyer who joins a French fighter group in May 40 and fights the German invasion along his French and Polish comrades in arms until the fall of France. Interspersed with eye-witness accounts of the Dunkirk evacuation, the author gives a vivid description of the Blitzkrieg and the chaos it causes on the French side. After Italy belatedly declares war on France, his group is then moved to the South of France. This little known episode of the remnants of the French Army and Air Force holding back with the help of the RAF the entire military might of fascist Italy is again well and vividly described.
The book is well written and an easy read. Action scenes are short but lively. The author paints a quite rounded picture of the fighter planes (maintenance, handling etc.) and the life (and deaths) of their pilots. The language is natural and not at all jingoistic. A bit patriotic at times, of course, but that goes with the theme. Not a pure high-octane action story but an informative book with action enough to keep anyone's interest going.
follow along with a British reconissance pilot in the days of the phony war in France. Then as the war heats up with the Nazi invasion of May 1940. The character's experiences provide the reader with a panorama of happenings in the allied armies as they try to grapple with the Nazi invasion. When the Dunkirk evacuation occurs, this pilot is with a French squadron, trying to repel the advancing Italians on France's eastern border. He is ultimately evacuated to Britain before the signing of the Amistice, but his account of his experiences is a microcosm of what was happening to the country in the 1939-1940 period. Most war novels I have read give scant detail of this time. This is a chance to broaden your horizons.
